Frequently Asked Colorado Cannabis Questions

Frequently Asked Colorado Cannabis Questions

Whether you are visiting Colorado or new to cannabis and cannabis culture, it's likely you have a few questions about our state's laws and how you can purchase and enjoy the plant. Below, let's take a look at some of the most common questions we get here at The Station and the answers from our knowledgeable cannabis professionals.

"Cannabis is completely legal in Colorado?"

Both medical and recreational cannabis are legal in our state: it's legal to own up to an ounce of marijuana and use it for any purpose. Much like alcohol, however, there are some caveats to purchasing it and where you can use it.

"How old do I have to be to purchase cannabis?"

You have to be 21 years or older to purchase and use cannabis. Just like purchasing alcohol, you will need to present an ID before buying.

"I'm from out of state—can I buy, too?"

You can, but if you have an out-of-state license, you will be limited by how much cannabis you can buy. Those visiting from out of state can only purchase a quarter of an ounce of cannabis at one time.

"Can I use it anywhere?"

No, personal cannabis is meant to be consumed/smoked in the privacy of one's own home. It can't be used outside like tobacco cigarettes, or inside bars, either.

"Not even in your store?"

No, unfortunately, cannabis cannot be used in commercial spaces, either—including those that sell it, like our dispensary. Cannabis "clubs" or "cafes" are also not permitted in Colorado.

"What about in my car?"

No. Much like alcohol open container laws, the use of cannabis is not permitted inside motor vehicles. The use of a motor vehicle while under the influence of cannabis is also prohibited.

"What about in my apartment?"

If you are renting a property, the cannabis usage policy is set by the landlord. Before purchasing, speak with your landlord and see what their cannabis policy is.

"I have a prescription—do these rules apply to me?"

Yes, they all do. There is no difference in purchase and consumption laws. Your prescription, however, may dictate where you should go to receive your cannabis. It is possible that someone younger than 21 can also receive medical marijuana via a prescription.

"Which kind should I buy?"

At The Station, we offer a variety of different strains—including those geared toward recreational use and others that are more popular and recommended for medical use. Our professionals are ready to help you assess the differences between these strains and help find the best fit for you.
