How Colorado’s Cannabis Laws Changed January 1st, 2018

How Colorado’s Cannabis Laws Changed January 1st, 2018

Colorado has become known across America as the state with the most progressive stance on medical marijuana and recreational cannabis products. However, despite the state’s many efforts to move marijuana laws forward, there are still many regulations and restrictions. At the beginning of 2018, a new wave of rules and updates became law. As a marijuana user, it is important you know about these legal changes.

Here is a quick rundown of some of the laws and what they do:

  • HB 187, 192, 1034 & 1261: This group of house bills (HB) focus on the marijuana industry and its businesses. They require dispensaries and cultivators to implement updated employee training protocols to prevent the inadvertent distribution or sale to the wrong people. They also call for packaging and labeling updates to make it easier to understand the nuances of a recreational marijuana strain as well as make the products less appealing to minors. There is also legalese in these bills that regulate how cannabis products are tested for potential contaminants before they reach the market.
  • HB 1367: The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment gains administrative powers to register or approve research on medical marijuana products. Approved research can be conducted either by a public or private entity. Interested parties will need to apply for a license from the Department.

The Marijuana Enforcement Division (MED) stated the legal changes implemented were meant to protect all parties involved with recreational and medicinal marijuana. Businesses, employees, and consumers gained legal protections through updates rules, the MED says. Any sort of clarity into how the medical and recreational marijuana industry is to be run and enjoyed by the people of Colorado should be an improvement. It is also a benefit to allow and encourage product research, which may eventually lead to better medical marijuana products.
