Why Is Cannabis Such An Effective Healer?

Why Is Cannabis Such An Effective Healer?

People often ask how the cannabis plant has the apparent ability to heal such a wide variety of seemingly unrelated conditions. The reason is that our body is literally engineered to utilize cannabinoids.

We are all familiar with THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol) and its psychoactive effects. We are now beginning to learn more about CBD (Cannabidiol) and its medicinal benefits. Science has found that our bodies have a collection of cell receptors and corresponding molecules known as the Endocannabinoid System, designed to maintain a balance, or homeostasis, between the body’s many physiological processes.

Normally we produce endocannabinoids that, when bound to their cell receptors, relay messages to the various systems that regulate homeostasis in the body. The Endocannabinoid System has been shown to affect sleep, appetite, digestion, hunger, mood, motor control, immune function, reproduction and fertility, pleasure and reward, pain, memory and temperature regulation.

Currently, researchers are aware of two endocannabinoid receptors, CB1 and CB2. CB1 receptors are concentrated in the brain and central nervous system, but also found in the lungs, vascular system, muscles, intestinal tract, and reproductive organs. CB2 receptors are concentrated in the peripheral nervous and immune systems, but also found in the spleen, bones and skin. Both can also be found in the liver, bone marrow and pancreas.

Studies have shown that when our own body is unable to produce a sufficient amount of its own endocannabinoids, known as Clinical Endocannabinoid Deficiency, many unpleasant symptoms and diseases can occur. People with endocannabinoid deficiencies are more prone to diseases such as fibromyalgia, IBS, PTSD and migraines among others. THC and CBD are both Phyto-cannabinoids which bind to the CB1 and CB2 receptors respectively, mitigating many of the effects from these conditions.

For example, inflammation is the immune system’s response to harmful stimuli and the body’s attempt to heal itself. However, when our immune system becomes over stimulated, it can lead to chronic inflammation and diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and some cancers. CBD has the ability to inhibit inflammation by binding to the CB2 receptors of our immune cells to create a better-balanced immune response.
